Waitakere Summer Hours

From Monday 19th December to Sunday 29th January Level 3 at the Waitakere Library will be open for reduced hours, while Levels 1 and 2 remain on normal hours. Level 3 hours will be:

Monday to Friday 8.00am - 5.00pm
Saturday & Sunday Closed

Level 3 will be closed for Christmas and New Year, from 24th December to 3rd January. For Levels 1 and 2 hours over the Christmas - New Year period, see the Auckland Council Libraries website.

Waitakere Library will be closed for Auckland Anniversary Day on Monday 30th January, and Level 3 will be back to normal hours from Tuesday 31st January.

Changes to printing and photocopying

The way you log in to the multifunction devices (MFDs) for printing, photocopying and scanning has changed.

You now see a menu on the screen, giving the choice between Print and Copy, Scan, Fax. Print is currently the default for Waitakere, Building 1, North Shore and the Student Computer Centre. Copy is the default for Main Library Mt Albert.

Select the option you want before swiping your card to log in. You can't change the selection after logging in. (You can still see the "Print" button when photocopying but it no longer works.)

If you want to do both photocopying and printing you'll have to finish one task, log out, and then select the other option and swipe your card again.

Download Library eBooks to your iPad, iPhone or eReader

Did you know you can download many Unitec Library eBooks to your iPad, iPhone or eReader? Our three main eBook suppliers (EBL, ebrary and Books24x7) have a range of approaches as follows:

EBL allows downloads using Adode Digital Editions but often the book must be read online for 5 minutes first or if it is expensive Library approval may be required - see more about EBL books.

You can now download permanently parts of ebrary books - the same number of pages you are allowed to print. And for most books you are able to download the entire book for up to two weeks, without charge (some publishers aren't allowing this feature). eBooks from ebrary can be downloaded to computers and devices including the iPhone, iPad, Kobo, Nook and Sony Reader, but not the Kindle. Downloading complete books requires installation of the free software Adobe Digital Editions, in the same way as for the EBL collection. Our eBooks from Books24x7 are currently only able to be viewed online. The supplier has a new 'On Demand platform' with a 'Chapters to Go' feature as well as mobile device compatibility (Books24x7 On The Go), which we are reviewing and may introduce next year - please email us if you would find this useful.

You can tell if an eBook is from EBL, ebrary or Books24x7 by placing your mouse over the title of the Book in LibrarySearch - see the picture below for an example. More about Library eBooks.

Longer hours in Main Library from Saturday 12 November

The Main Library (Mt Albert hub) will be open for longer hours during study and exam weeks, beginning on Saturday 12 November 2011 and ending on Thursday 1 December 2011. The extended opening hours are as follows:

Mon- Thurs 8.00 - 10.00
Fri 8.00 - 7.00
Sat-Sun 9.00 - 7.00

The Student Computer Centre and other branches' hours are unchanged.

Library login overnight outage 18 - 19 October

Due to a technical upgrade to Unitec's PeopleSoft system the Library login will not be available during the following period:

Outage starts: 18 October 4pm
Outage stops: 19 October 9am

This will mean you cannot do the following during this period:

Log into LibrarySearch
- you will not be able to renew or request books online, or access your Library account including saved searches or saved records of favourite books or other items. However we are open until 9pm on the 18th and you can phone or email us and we can renew or request items for you during this time.
Search Library Databases via LibrarySearch or Multi-Search (QuickSearch and CustomSearch)
- you will not be able to search across more than one database at a time, however you will be able to search individual databases by clicking on the name of the Database listed in the Databases A-Z or in your Subject Guide.

Library TXT Notices service outage 18 - 27 October

Please note that due to a technical upgrade to Unitec's PeopleSoft system the Library TXT (SMS) Notices service will not be running from 18 October to 27 October 2011. This means that if you subscribe to the service you will not get automated text messages to your phone for overdue or recalled books during the outage period. However overdue and recall reminders will still be emailed during the outage period.

You can still text the Library on 021 488155 and use our Live Help chat service during the outage period.

Welcome Rovers!

Today we're announcing a new service at the Mt Albert Main Library with the release of our 6 student rovers into the library: Chamandeep, Courtney, Linkin, Miracle, Nelson, and Sergey.

You'll see these students wandering around the library wearing lanyards and (eventually) t-shirts announcing "Ask Me"! They are here to help you with any questions you might have. Don't be afraid to ask them.

This service is a pilot until the end of the year. It may evolve into something more depending on what happens.

If you have any comments or feedback about it, please let us know. You can leave a comment on this blog, or send us an email, or just chat to us about it, either face to face or online.

Recreational Reading Kicks Off at Unitec Library

The Main Library at Unitec’s Mt. Albert Campus recently launched a brand new section for reading and circulation. The library staff celebrated the launch on 3 August in the HUB dressed as classic literary characters and serving sausages. The recreational reading section is located on the second floor, to the right of the top of the main staircase.

Mariette McClement, Manager of Information & Learning Services at the Library explains, “The recreational reading collection was developed in response to a Tertiary Education Commission initiative to enhance literacy skills. By encouraging students to read for leisure we can hopefully contribute to improving their literacy skills and foster a love of reading”

The library has only begun its collection of recreational reading books. Staff members at the library are taking suggestions for new titles to add to the collection - to make recommendations use the via suggestion box in the Library, or email us or leave a comment below.

“The wide range of suggestions we've received truly represent our diverse range of students , with authors ranging from Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh to Stephenie Meyer and Ant Sang and titles ranging from classics like "Pride and Prejudice" to graphic novels like "X-Men" says McClement.

The check-out policy for recreational reading remains the same as for academic material. Books can be borrowed for up to thirty days and can be renewed once. Students already seem very excited about the reading initiative.

Three students who attended the launch BBQ; Sonia, Yolisha, and Sam, offered their opinion on the new reading options, “there will be a lot more interest in visiting the library now that they offer more popular fiction” These particular book lovers said that they would put the recreational reading section to use on a weekly basis.

Plus for more cheap reading options, Long Black Café in Building 1 has launched a public “book swap”. The policy is to bring some literature to take some literature. The book exchange will accept anything from magazines to fiction novels.

New database - Anatomy.TV

New Library Website

The new look Library website was launched on 23 February. The changes to the design and navigation followed a range of testing, surveys and consultation with students and site users in general in order to make the site easier to use. It incorporates the new Unitec branding and makes use of the space available on modern computer monitors.

We would be glad to receive any comments you may have about the usability of the site.

In particular we would like to know if you find any links not working, pages not being where you expect them, or information you need not being available.

Unitec Library goes Green this Week

Conservation Week runs from 12 to 19 September, so we thought this week would be a good time to showcase some of the great information resources we have on all things 'green'. Take a look at our new 'green' guide: http://libguides.unitec.ac.nz/green

Check out the Conservation Week display in the Main Library (next to hub - Mt Albert campus). This display includes related books, dvds, and journals, plus a thought-provoking powerpoint presentation by one of Unitec's 'green' lecturers Peter Mellalieu.

To see more resources you can browse the shelves for library call numbers like: 333, 338 and 658 amongst others. But remember that alot of the most up-to-date resources are only available in electronic form as ebooks and ejournals, so use LibrarySearch as well as browsing the shelves. For ebooks search the Catalogue for phrases such as "sustainable development' and "environmental aspects". To access full text ejournal articles just login to LibrarySearch and search under 'databases'.

On Sunday 29 August the ScienceDirect and Scopus databases will be unavailable from 12.30 to 9.30am, due to scheduled maintenance.

Library Survey Results

The results of the Library survey that was carried out in May 2010 are now available. The Report states that "The Library recorded an overall score of 79.1%. This places Unitec Library in the top 25% of libraries that have surveyed with us over the last 2 years".

This is an outstanding achievement given the level of our resourcing against the 37 benchmarked libraries (4 NZ university libraries; 28 Australian university libraries; 4 Australian polytechnics; one Australian tertiary health services provider). This result proves (among other things) the value of what we're doing and the way we are working for our users. Unitec chief executive Rick Ede wrote: "Congratulations to the whole team for an excellent result and for having the courage to brave the waters!"

What next?

The Library has determined the 'factors for improvement' it will prioritize. Our short list includes the state of the facilities at Building One, which had a number of comments made about it. We are also focussing on the following categories from the survey:

'I can find a quiet space in the Library to study'
'A computer is available when I need one'
'Printing, scanning and photocopying facilities in the Library meet my needs'
'The items I'm looking for on the library shelves are usually there'.

Tours take about fifteen minutes. There's no need to book - just come to the Lending desk and join the other students.

Introducing LibrarySearch

LibrarySearch is the Library's new search tool. It replaces the old Library Catalogue as well as the database Multi-Search tool. With LibrarySearch you can search for all the Library's resources using a single interface.

Use the tabs to choose whether you want to search the catalogue for books or DVDs, search the Library databases for journal articles, search the course reserve collection, or search for exam papers.

When you click on the Databases tab, you will see a dropdown menu of subject areas to choose from.

Each subject area contains a set of databases selected as the most appropriate for that subject. Before searching databases you need to log in with your username and password - otherwise you won't see any results. You also need to log in if you want to put any books on hold.

Click on My Account to see what books you have out, and to see the status of your requests. You can also use My Account to save your favourite searches, to make lists of books and articles, and to create your own set of databases to search.

When you've performed a search, use the facets in the menu on the left of the screen to narrow down your results.

Library Survey - Winners Announced

Thank you to everyone who responded to the Library survey. We hope the results will enable us to improve our services to you.

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Westfield vouchers are Jennifer Haven (Health student) and Kimberley Eddy (Education student). Kimberley said that she was so so so happy and that it was a pleasure answering the survey. She also says that she feels that Unitec library is a great help towards her studies.

When we've received and analyzed the results over the next two months, we will post a summary of the survey findings.

Unitec Research Bank

The research outputs of Unitec, including theses, are being collected in a new institutional repository called the Unitec Research Bank. The Research Bank replaces Coda, the old institutional repository that ceased operations at the end of 2009.

Links to the theses from their records in the Library Catalogue will be created in due course, but for the present you can access theses by searching the Research Bank.

We can send these reminders to you by text - Just register to trial our new text notices service. It’s FREE, easy and convenient.

To register follow these steps:

Click here to go to the myUnitec portal and Log in using your normal Unitec network username and password. The registration page should then open. If it does not open - click on the LIBRARY TXT NOTICES link on the portal's left menu.
Click the ‘register here' link at top of the registration page.
Type your mobile phone number into the box
Click the Submit button (then you are registered)

Once you are registered you will receive the following types of Library notices:

Your Hold/Recall is available to pick up - An item that you requested is now available to pick up from your chosen pick-up library
Your item has been recalled - An item you have out has been recalled by another user and must be returned within 7 days or earlier if it was due earlier
Overdue notice – Notice telling you that some items you have out are overdue and are accruing fines
Overdue recall notice – This notice tells you that an item you have was recalled by another user and not returned by you and is now overdue and accruing large fines
Reminder notice - Advance notice that some items you have out will be due for return or renewal in a few days time (also known as Courtesy Notices)

If you wish to stop the notices at any time just login to the registration page and select ‘unsubscribe’ and click Submit.

Waitakere Library Earlier Opening

Level 3 of Waitakere Joint Library and Te Puna Ora o Waitakere (Room 1001, Building 500) are now open at 8.00am from Monday to Friday.

Access to Level 3 is only by the airbridge from Level 3 of Building 510. Levels 1 and 2 of Waitakere Library remain closed until 8.30.

EndNote training session

A training session in the bibliographic management software EndNote for staff and postgraduate students will be held in the Library Training Room on Wednesday 14th April from 2.00 to 3.30. The session will cover the new features of EndNote X3, the latest edition, and use the new 6th edition of the APA Publication Manual.

EndNote is a software package that allows you to store and manage bibliographic references. It assists with creating bibliographies, making it a very useful tool for writing academic papers.

Registration for the session is essential. You can register by emailing infolit@unitec.ac.nz. Please allow the full 90 minutes for the session.

RIP Coda

Coda, Unitec's insitutional repository, has ceased to exist. It will be replaced early in the New Year by a new Unitec Research Bank containing Unitec theses and other research outputs. The Research Bank is expected to start operations by the end of January. Until then there will be no online access to Unitec's research outputs.

Library Stocktake

During the summer the Library will be carrying out a stocktake of books and AV items. On the Catalogue, items may show as "in transit" rather than "available".

If you see items which have this status they may be in transit between branches or more likely, awaiting the stocktake process. You won't be able to put these items on hold on the Catalogue, but you can still place a hold by asking library staff. You will then be informed by email when the item is available for you to collect.

Multi-Search

The Library's new Multi-Search programme enables you to search multiple databases and the Library catalogue simultaneously. You can search pre-selected groups of databases or choose the databases yourself.

You can also save your favourite searches to run on a regular basis, and save your favourite journal articles.

EndNote Training Sessions

Postgraduate students are invited to attend one of the following training sessions in the bibliographic management software EndNote:

The training sessions will be held in the Main Library training room. These sessions are for students only, not staff.

Art and Architecture Complete

The Library is trialling a new database, Art and Architecture Complete.

Ebsco describes it as follows: "Art & Architecture Complete - BETA is a comprehensive bibliographic database that provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 630 academic journals, magazines and trade publications with full text for over 240 periodicals and 140 books, as well as selective coverage for over 50 publications. The database has been designed for use by a diverse audience that includes art scholars, artists, designers, college students, and general viewers."

EndNote X2 now available

EndNote X2 has been installed in all student labs and libraries on campus. Libraries have copies of EndNote X2 available for students and staff to borrow to install on their own computers. Both MAC and PC versions are available.

Staff who wish to have EndNote X2 installed on Unitec computers will need to log a job with IT.

The APA style for EndNote X2 incorporates the new changes to APA which were introduced by the APA 6th Manual.

The Library has upgraded its instant message service by installing a new programme called Library H3lp (pronounced 'Library Help'!)

You can now click on links from the Library website and the catalogue to access a pop-up chat window to talk to Library staff. We can provide information you are looking for, guide you in your search strategies and send files direct to you at your computer.

If you prefer, you can still chat to us from the window embedded in the Ask a Librarian page, or by using your personal IM account.

We aim to be available for chat during most of the hours that we are open.

Endnote sessions for postgraduate students

Downloading Catalogue Records to EndNote

You can download records from the Library catalogue to EndNote if you have the correct connection file installed.

The connection file provided with the EndNote CD does not work with our new catalogue system.

To obtain the correct file, go to Research Tools - EndNote on the Library website.

Click on the link to Library Catalogue EndNote connection file.

A window pops up asking if you want to save or open the file. Select 'Save'.

Go to My Computer and navigate to C:/Program Files/EndNote X1/Connections.

Drag the UNITEC-Voyager connection file to the Connections folder.

Open EndNote and select Online Search - New Search from the Tools menu.

Select UNITEC-Voyager from the list.

A Search window will appear that you can use to search the Library catalogue.

Ebrary's interface has been upgraded

Ebrary (an electronic book collection) has a new interface, so you may notice some changes when looking at their online books. Although you can now browse books without needing to use the Ebrary reader, we recommend you install the reader to have fuller access. Note that the Reader is already automatically installed on all Unitec machines. You can find Ebrary books via the Unitec Library Catalogue or by going to the library's Online Resources, Databases A-Z, and clicking on Ebrary. Rehabilitation Reference Center trial

The Library is trialling Rehabilitation Reference Center, an evidence-based full-text database. Designed for physical therapists, occupational therapists and other rehabilitation professionals, RRC provides the best available, most accurate and concise information on conditions seen in rehabilitation practice, allowing rehabilitation specialists to build customized treatment regimens for patients at the point-of-care.

Emerald problem

The "Email this page" function in the Emerald database is currently not functioning properly. If you try to use it an error message appears.

You can still email a page by copying the URL of the page you want from the address bar and sending it in an email message.

Emerald expects the problem to be fixed early in the New Year.

Library summer hours

New Library computer system

The library is upgrading its current library management computer system to the Voyager library management system. This means we will have a new system to issue books and the Catalogue will have a new look from 5th December.

Voyager will go live on Friday 5th December. In preparation for that, we regret that there will be some inconvenience to users:

From 1st to 5th December we will be unable to issue books and other material, place holds or renew material. We will, however, be able to issue any urgent material manually.

We will still be able to accept books for return.

On Friday 5th December the Mt Albert Campus Libraries (Main and Building One) will be closed.

Why are there no new books and journals?

We are changing our library computer system to Voyager. As a result, we regret that there are currently no new books or journal issues being added to the catalogue or display shelves in the library. From 5 December our catalogue will have a whole new look to it.

Goodbye INFOS

INFOS, the programme giving access to the New Zealand statistical series, is being phased out and replaced by Infoshare, a new web-based interface for the information. Infoshare should provide a more user-friendly experience for researchers. Links to INFOS will remain on the Library website as long as Statistics New Zealand continues to support it.

SciQuest Trial

Unitec Library is trialling the SciQuest database until 1 November 2008. SciQuest offers full text access to New Zealand and Australian veterinary and animal science and veterinary continuing education publications. These include the New Zealand Veterinary Journal, New Zealand Veterinary Association Special Interest Branch Proceedings and New Zealand Society of Animal Production Proceedings.

New database trial

From now until the end of 2008 Unitec Library will be trialling the database Vocational Studies Complete.

Vocational Studies Complete is designed to support the research needs of trade courses, and covers a wide range of subjects including computer & data processing, CAD, electrical technology, graphic arts, health information technology, interior design, travel & tourism and veterinary nursing.

New Ebsco interface

Ebsco, the publishers of most of the Unitec Library databases, have adopted a new interface. They have provided a flash demonstration of the new features.

There is currently a problem with how search results display in the new interface on Internet Explorer when the monitor is set at a resolution of 800x600. The results are there but you have to scroll down to see them.

New online database guide

New setup for Main Library computers

The six computers in a circle in front of the Issues desk at the Main Library were formerly able to be used without logging on, and were intended mainly for catalogue searching.

They have now been modified so that they have the same setup as the other Library PCs. This means that you have to log on to use them with your Unitec username and password. You can use them to access your personal files, and can print from them.

If you just want to do a quick catalogue search without logging on, there are two new PCs set up for this purpose. They are between the book stacks and the wall, on your right as you come in to the Library and face away from the Issues desk.

Four more PCs are to be installed, so that eventually there will be six PCs for catalogue searching; three on the ground floor and three on the first floor.

Laws of New Zealand

The Library has subscribed to the electronic version of the legal encyclopedia Laws of New Zealand.

This resource has approximately 150 subject titles (eg animals, environment, family protection, recreation and entertainment) with each title covering all aspects of the NZ law relating to the subject area, including a table of statutes and cases.

Laws of New Zealand is available as part of the Library's Lexis-Nexis subscription. It can be found on the A-Z databases list and on the Law subject page.

The Library's subscription to the print version of Laws of New Zealand has been discontinued.

EndNote XI now available

The latest edition of the citation management software EndNote is now available to be borrowed from the library. EndNote is only available on CD-ROM. It cannot be downloaded. To obtain an EndNote CD simply go to the Issues desk at any branch of the Library. At present only Windows CDs are available.

The main difference from earlier editions is the ability to create groups of references on a similar subject. Existing EndNote libraries can easily be transferred from EndNote X to EndNote XI.

New database: JSTOR Arts and Science Collection III

We now have access to the JSTOR Arts & Sciences III collection.

This provides an almost complete backrun, with fulltext, of 150 titles in architecture, the arts and humanities (see title list).
Due to licensing agreements with publishers however, issues are usually "embargoed" or not available for 2-5 years after publication (also called a moving wall).

Film & Television Literature Index with Full Text

Full text version of one of our current subscriptions has just been released. Subject coverage includes film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews. The database provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 270 publications (and selected coverage of more than 300), as well as full text for 70 journals and nearly 50 books.

SAGE Publications publishes over 460 journals in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology and Medicine.

SAGE Journals Online is the delivery platform that provides online access to the full text of individual SAGE journals. The SAGE Full-Text Collections, SAGE's award-winning, discipline-specific research databases, are also available on SAGE Journals Online.

Science Direct ebooks

We have access to a trial of 500 electronic books from Science Direct.
The full-text of the books, covering a wide range of scientific disciplines, will be available from the Science Direct website . Just type in the name of the book in the Journal/book Title search box.

Emerald Database Upgrade

The Emerald Database has been upgraded.

Emerald is a full text database covering management, library and information services, education, property, operations, production and economics, and engineering.

We now have to 150 fulltext journals, 200,000 reviews from the world's top 300 management journals and access to over 75,000 full text articles.

WorldCat contains records of dissertations, theses, and published materials based on all subjects catalogued by OCLC member libraries. Many citations link to full text licensed from NetLibrary and other electronic providers as well as to free electronic materials available from educational, government and other websites.

Linking from Science Direct journals

At present the connection between the journal record in our catalogue and the Science Direct database is not working properly.
If you locate a Science Direct journal in our catalogue (for example Academic Radiology) you should just be able to click on the url link and be taken to that journal in the Science Direct database. At present this link comes back with a login error.
You will be able to get in but you will need to change the url first.
1. right-click on the url link
2. select Copy Shortcut
3. right-click on the address bar in your browser and select paste
4. change the address where it says ...sciencedirect.com/college/... to
...sciencedirect.com/science/...

Pidgeon Digital - a new resource for architecture & design

Pidgeon Digital is the online version of The Pidgeon Audiovisual collection of illustrated talks by architects and related designers. We have recently acquired access to this resource; if you are on campus you should be able to search the resource directly. If you are off campus, you will be asked to enter your normal Novell login before gaining full access to the resource.

We are delighted to announce the beginning of a series of podcasts from your library!

Our aim is to help you to use our resources effectively so we hope our podcasts will give you another way in which to learn more about us.

You can listen to the podcast on your computer or on your MP3 player. We also have an RSS feed that you can subscribe to so you will be alerted to any new podcasts we produce.

We still ironing out some issues with the hosting of the podcasts, so if you try and download these while on campus you will find it takes a long time. But if you are off campus, the download time will be dependent on your connection speed.

Searchpath Online Tutorial

Work through our new interactive online tutorial to help you locate and use information effectively and develop good research skills. The tutorial is self-paced and self-assessed. There are six modules:
Starting smart, choosing a topic, using the library catalogue, finding articles, using the web and citing sources.
Lecturers: talk to the library staff about incorporating or adapting this tutorial into your teaching.

EBOSS - a new resource for architecture & construction

EBOSS (Electronic Building Online Specification Site)
is a database which contains a large number of product catalogues for fixtures and fittings.

We have recently acquired access to this resource; if you are on campus you should be able to search the catalogues directly.

If you are off campus, you will be asked to enter your normal Novell login before gaining full access to the catalogues.

You will be able to view photos as well as specs, FAQs, and features of the products.

Link resolver - Link Source

The Library has subscribed to Link Source from Ebsco. Linksource is a link resolver which will create links between database article and so make access to full text more accessible.

For example, if a journal is indexed in Scopus and an article in that journal is full text in another database, a button will appear on the Scopus screen linking you to the fulltext article in the other database.

In setting Link source up, we have come across a lot of problems, mainly due to different standards and linking protocols used by databases, so the system isnt perfect. Let us know if a particular link doesn't work. We need as much detail as you can give us, so we can backtrack and find the problem.

Link resolver

Link resolver (Beta testing)

The library has acquired a link resolver, called Link Source which will enable linking to fulltext articles across our many databases. This will be particularly useful with our many ‘index only’ databases making them more like their fulltext cousins. You will start to see a new icon (above) on our databases soon.

The link resolver will eventually allow you to move seamlessly between selected webpages, articles, and documents (provided they comply with the necessary standards).

The system is complex and will take a bit of time to set up so please be patient with us. AND please provide feedback when you come across problems (happy to have good feedback too!).

E-book Access Off Campus
