Journals can now be loaned for 3 weeks (if another person has not requested it). The loan is for 1 week with 2 automatic renewals of 1 week.

The journals are shelved alongside books of the same Dewey numbers in boxes in order of year of publication.

A few journals cannot be borrowed, but these are clearly labelled as Not for Loan, with most of the journal collection available to staff and students.

You can find out if we have a specific journal title by searching the library catalogue LibrarySearch and by browsing the library shelves.

The most recent issues are on a display shelf at the front of Te Puna and on a new journals display shelf in Waitākere library.

Check out the library website for more details about borrowing rules and limits.

The change of loan length will take effect for journals issued after 15 November 2022.

If you have any questions, please email library@unitec.ac.nz.

Unitec Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11189147291139837483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19367306.post-3719416790819910362022-09-29T08:59:00.006+13:002023-06-28T14:08:47.779+12:00Returning library items at end of your studiesAt the end of your time studying at Unitec, you are required to return all your library items. You will be reminded via email sent to your preferred email address, to return your loaned items within two weeks of your last class. You will be charged for all outstanding loans within a month of your final class.

Returning these items to the library will remove the outstanding fees from your Unitec account. Large outstanding fees may be referred to our debt collection agency.

We encourage you to speak to a library team leader if you have problems locating or paying for lost items.

Need to return library books?

At Mt Albert Campus there are two outdoor library return boxes. One return box is near Student Central outside Te Puna B180 doors - opposite the Copy Centre, and the other return box is by Breaktime opposite B183.
You can also return items to the Ask Me desk.

At Waitākere Campus you can return Unitec library items through the Waitākere Public Library returns slot and within the Unitec Library.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Increasingly loaned items are not being returned.

To encourage the return of loaned items we will be shortening the time before the item is declared lost. Once the item is declared lost the borrower is liable for the cost of the item as a debt owing to Unitec. This debt will result in blocks to library services and may also block enrolment in Unitec courses and graduation.

If the book is returned the debt will be removed.

If the book is not returned the blocks will remain in place and we may pass the debt to a debt collection service.

Please contact libadmin@unitec.ac.nz if you have any queries about this change.Unitec Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11189147291139837483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19367306.post-70284535314378606242022-05-10T15:52:00.000+12:002022-05-10T15:52:22.659+12:00Discontinuing Library text notification service
The library will no longer offer a text service.

You will still receive emails to your preferred email address regarding the availability of your library request and the pending due date and lost status of your loans.

You can update your email address in student self-service via the student portal.

Please contact library@unitec.ac.nz if you have any queries about this change.
Unitec Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11189147291139837483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19367306.post-13912616053918866002022-04-26T14:55:00.001+12:002022-04-26T16:31:12.429+12:00The Fred Tschopp CollectionFred Tschopp came to New Zealand at the start of the Depression and made plans for five parks in Auckland, such as Craigavon Park. He was American and did a lot of work in and around Los Angeles. In the late 1920s, he and his wife decided to go on a big world exploration, which led him to arrive in New Zealand. He was provided with many letters of recommendation from people in the US who he had worked with/for, recommending him as a trustworthy gentleman and a fine landscape architect. We have many of these letters. During his time in New Zealand, he worked for the Borough of Mt Albert, worked on landscaping Parliament House and Premier House, and was heavily involved in what appears to be his biggest project of landscaping the city of Rotorua. This work was done in the early 1930s.

Location of the collection

The collection is in a cabinet in the quiet study area on Level 3 of Te Puna. This year’s theme for ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is ‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna which means, connect me to the soil of my ancestors.

The theme reflects on the journey of Cook Islands peoples in New Zealand, as well as the longing of young Cook Islanders to connect with their language, culture, and identity. Acknowledging that while community elders are fundamental to the teaching and sharing of Cook Islands language, the leadership of young people as the next wave of cultural and language experts is also critical in keeping the connection to their homelands alive.

This year’s theme also reflects the overarching 2021 Pacific Language Week theme of Wellbeing, by linking the importance of language to overall wellbeing. The three official languages are English, Cook Islands Māori and Pukapukan. Cook Islands Māori has a number of dialects, the most widely used is Rarotongan. The Cook Islands consist of 15 islands that are divided up into Northern and Southern groups.

Unitec Library has resources both in electronic and print version to learn more about the culture, language and history. 30 May – Saturday 5 June, 2021. Samoa’s 59th year of independence was on
Tuesday 1 June.

<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">The theme is Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale which means
strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive. When you’re building a
foundation for a fale (house) it can’t have a weak foundation or posts. This is
the same for the foundations of our families, schools and churches that play an
important role in strengthening Gagana Samoa (the Samoan Language). Language is
important for the foundations of our overall wellbeing.

Centre is also running some events on campus to embrace and celebrate Vaiaso o
le Gagana Samoa. Staff and students are welcome to join in this week to wear
blue and sing the Samoan national anthem and do a Unitec Tik Tok video, Game show –
who wants to be a Samoan and Public lecture – We are Samoa. More info is on the

Language Week, my colleagues Leone Samu Tui (Associate Curator, Documentary Heritage,
Pacific) and Seulupe Dr Falaniko Tominiko (Deputy Chair of Auckland Museum’s
Pacific Advisory Group) reflect on the significance of a measina held in
Auckland Museum’s manuscript collection: an unpublished tusi faʻalupega or
collection of Sāmoan chiefly titles and village salutations, compiled in 1902.
