Unitec Library celebrates Kiribati Language Week 2020 being held from Sunday 12 July – Saturday 18 July, 2020. The theme for this year is 'Ribanan te Taetae ni Kiribati e Kateimatoa ara Katei ao Kinakira;' which means 'Nurturing Kiribati language promotes our Cultural Identity and Heritage'.
It is the first time ever Kiribati Language Week has been celebrated officially here in Aotearoa. The theme supports Kiribati people living in Aotearoa, to connect with their culture and identity through the indigenous language. There is a strong focus on utilising technology and virtual platforms as a tool to promote language, culture, and identity. The vast majority speak Gilbertese or I-Kiribati, a Micronesian dialect. English, as the official language, is also widely spoken, especially in the capital,Tarawa.
The former Gilbert Islands, Kiribati has the largest marine reserve in the South Pacific. The effects of rising sea levels and low lying coral atolls have placed an adverse threat from climate change that is challenging for the island nation.
