Cook Islands Language Week 2020

Kia orana,

Turou, ’āere mai ki te ‘epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki’ Āirani - Welcome to Cook Islands Language Week 2020 is being held from Sunday 2 August – Saturday 8 August, 2020. The theme for this year is "Kia pūāvai tō tātou Reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani i Aotearoa" which means "That the Cook Islands Māori language may blossom throughout New Zealand."

The three official languages are English, Cook Islands Māori and Pukapukan. Cook Islands Māori has a number of dialects, the most widely used is Rarotongan. The Cook Islands consist of 15 islands that are divided up into Northern and Southern groups. Did you know that the tivaevae, or treasured quilts is believed to have arrived in the Cook Islands by the wives of early European missionaries, where local women were taught quilting and needlework in traditional art form.

Unitec Library has resources both in electronic and print version to learn more about the culture, language and history. Check out the Unitec Library catalogue and our Pacific subject guide.

Use the hashtag #CookIslandsLanguageWeek to follow the events on social media.

Come in and see our library display on Level 3, Building 180 at Te Puna.
