Tokelau Language Week 2020

 Mālō ni, taloha ni,

Unitec Library celebrates Te vaiaho o te gagana Tokelau, Tokelau Language Week 2020. The theme is ‘Apoapo tau foe, i nā tāfea i te galutau. Ke mau mai, ke mau mai’ - 'Never give up hope, even amidst chaos and much uncertainty. Stay united, stay strong'.

The theme “Apoapo tau foe, i nā tāfea i te galutau” is part of a traditional Tokelauan prayer, asking the people rowing a canoe to hold on dearly to the paddles and row in unison so we are not washed away by the tidal/big waves. “Ke mau mai, ke mau mai” is an encouragement to be strong and maintain rowing consistently/non-stop. This years theme was influenced by the events of 2020 and how the COVID-19 outbreak has shaped a new normal for the Tokelau community and everyone worldwide.

It will run from Sunday 25 October to Saturday 31 October. Tokelau is an island territory of Aotearoa that comprises of three atolls in the South Pacific. Niuean Language Week 2020

 Fakaalofa lahi atu,

Unitec Library celebrates Faahi Tapu he Vagahau Niue, Niue Language Week 2020. The theme is: ‘Faliki e tau momoui he tau atuhau ke he Vagahau Niue ’ - “Lay the foundations - give rise to Vagahau Niue for generations".

 

This years theme reminds us of the need to not only respect and treasure our languages and cultures but to work daily to ensure the foundation remains strong for generations to come. Niue Language week is in its ninth year, the 2020 Niue Language Week is focused on laying the foundations to give rise to Vagahau Niue for future generations.

 It will run from Sunday 18 October to Saturday 24 October. Niueans are the fourth largest community with over 30,000 people in Aotearoa. Niue known as the Rock of Polynesia and it’s capital, Alofi is a self-governing state in free association with Aotearoa. Fijian Language Week 2020

 Unitec Library celebrates Macawa ni Vosa Vakaviti, Fijian Language Week 2020.

Theme is: Noqu Vosa, Noqu iSema Bula’ - “My language, my living link”.

It will run from Sunday 4 October to Saturday 10 October. This theme reflects the strength and connection a people’s language and cultural identity provide as they make their life’s journey, particularly during challenging times. Our languages are our identity and are key to our wellbeing and success. Today we are also celebrating and acknowledging Fiji’s 50th independence since Fiji became an independent nation from Great Britain on 10^th October, 1970. The Republic of Fiji has three official languages: English, iTaukei and Fiji Hindi. Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands located in the heart of the South Pacific. The two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Tuvalu Language Week 2020

Unitec Library celebrates Vaiaso o te Gana Tuvalu, Tuvalu Language Week 2020.

The theme is: Fakatili Te Kiloga Fou" - "Navigating the changing environment". The theme this year comes from cultural acts and practices. These are often used as analogy for Tuvalu orators in their speeches. In this case the analogy is that of fishing.

It will run from Sunday 27 September to Saturday 3 October. Tuvalu, formerly Ellice Islands is a group of nine small islands comprising of coral atolls and reef islands. There are two groups of Tuvaluan dialects, based on dialects spoken in the northern and southern islands. Funafuti is the capital of Tuvalu.
